How automatic background removal works

The tool uses a machine-learning model trained to tell a foreground subject apart from its background. It produces a mask, a map of which pixels belong to the subject, then deletes the rest, leaving your subject on transparency ready to drop onto any colour or scene.

That is why it is so much faster than tracing an outline by hand, and it works best on clear subjects like people, products and animals against a reasonably distinct background.

Getting the cleanest cut-out

Start from a high-resolution image with good, even lighting and a background that contrasts with the subject. Fine detail like wispy hair, fur or transparent glass is the hardest for any automatic tool, so results there may need a small touch-up.

Once you have the transparent PNG, you can place it on a solid colour, a new photo, or leave it transparent for logos and overlays. Processing happens on your device, so the image is never uploaded.

Do my photos get uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model runs locally in your browser, so your images are processed entirely on your device.

Why is the first run slow?

The AI model (several megabytes) downloads the first time you use the tool. After that it's cached, so subsequent images process much faster.

What kind of images work best?

Photos with a clear subject, like a person, product or animal, against a distinguishable background give the cleanest cut-outs.

What format is the output?

A PNG with a transparent background, so you can drop your subject onto any other image or color.
